Siddhattha Gotama was the Buddha's name. His given name, Siddhattha, means `He Who Attained His Goal' and Gotama, `Best Cow', was his family name. After his enlightenment Siddhattha was usually called by his disciples Lord (Bhagava) and was known as ascetic Gotama (samaõa Gotama) by others. It is interesting to note that the name Siddhattha does not occur anywhere in the Tipiñaka.
